The folks at Nullsoft have completed the beta version of their upcoming Winamp 5 media-player. As you might have heard, Winamp 5 combines the capabilities of version 2 and 3. Imagine the slim and fast Winamp 2 with freeform skinning, video-playback and a lot more. The word is, that the final version will be released in early November.

Whats new?

* modern skin updates :

  - fixed win98 crash with desktopalpha skins
  - fixed pledit jumping on top of main window when docked and interacting with config drawer
  - fixed avs hiding main window when docking to editor
  - fixed vis gammagroup filtering
  - fixed bgr color for pledit scrollbar background in v1.0 skins
  - fixed rare crash on skinswitch
  - added timers resolution autodetection
  - added configuration of text scrolling speed
  - added vis_cfg action to toggle vis cfg window via button
  - fixed config drawer tabs moving the app when not selected
  - added enable docking checkbox and docking distance editobox in prefs
  - added tooltip checkbox in prefs
  - fixed tooltip stealing focus from popup menus
  - added support for noresize flag in embedwnd so that it spawns the right container
  - added notransparency flag for embedwnd, made milkdrop use it
  - fixed potential aot reset by embedwnd (ie, milkdrop)
  - fixed slow text ticker, made it use timerclient_getSkipped to have consistent speed regardless of timer resolution
  - added timer resolution in prefs page
  - added link ratio & alpha in prefs page
  - fixed empty popups in pledit menubar, commandbuttons and ml menubar when no playlist or devices are available
  - fixed "mono" display when nothing playing, made songinfo update faster after clicking play
  - separated link position & link width for main winshade window, changed default to link all
  - removed move="1" for song title display on main window normal and shade modes
  - fixed click on beatvis that would sometime fail to toggle active status
  - added gammagroup xml param to vis objects
  - made switching to windowshade open undocked video & vis when video is playing or vis is visible, docks back when coming back to normal mode

* made library able to update info on files that dont support tag writing when tag writing is checked

* fixed burning bug when using certain .WAV output settings

* enabled burning on multiple devices simultaneously

* made Winamp check to see if AVS or milkdrop is running fullscreen before starting video playback, and remove
  fullscreen if necessary

* made AVS and Milkdrop check for video playback before going fullscreen (milkdrop uses fake mode, AVS complains)
  (to avoid DirectDraw crash)

However, some features of the new version are limited to Winamp 5 Pro, which requires a registration. These features include:

* Rip your CDs into the popular MP3 format
* Rip your CDs at the maximum speed your computer is capable
* Burn your compilation CDs at your CD burner's maximum speed
* Have access to the latest Winamp 5 Pro features

It's pretty slim for what it does, doesn't compete with my heavier applications (3dsmax) the new default skin kicks arse, especially minimised and stretched horizontally (bye bye mmd3).

I'd like some .ogm support, but you can't have everything, zPlayer will have to live for the video now :)

The minimum processor is said to be 1GHz.... Their player keeps eating up more and more power.
Some times that can be a bad thing.

well i love it i love it i love it..... but
i got something boring me a lot, when i play to ET , and stop, winamp is unable to stay at the original place with the scale i ve choosen, i guess it s because off the screen resolution changes, but my other softs doesn t have this prob.

hope they ll correct that, it s a detail but boring detail to me.

i love it! i love it i love it !!!!!!!

err I guess theres no edit eh? :(

I think 5 like 3, will also be very bloated (obvious by the features list) and this isnt winamp like, when winamp first started it was very basic but very functional in the same.

Hopefully they will get it right this time, Im still running 2.91.. and will probably continue to do so until i hear word 5 is stable. As much as I love winamp 3 is junk IMO!

it s seems very stable to me, it s just a little bit slower than 2.9 at the beguinning, and using a few more ram, but nothing to see with the auwfull v3
and it s seems to be fully compatible with v2 and v3 skins.

i ve just noticed that it moves when changing screen resolution and go back to undred per cent size if rescal was in use. but most people will never even notice that and everything else is very cool! and you re free to use it exactly as you were using v2, just forget other options and skins, and it s done!

if you re not with a 64 meg of ram , you won t notice a real difference and i guess that the new codecs are in so ...

Sorry. We try to only use our powers in the furtherance of good and righteousness. But it's true the devil still signs our paychecks.

It's kinda a tickly situation to be in.

For instance, we have to include a thing in the installer to put an icon on your desktop. We have to. But, at the very least, we got to argue them down to making it a checkbox.

We lost the fight over the default setting for the checkbox, of course.

It's a game of give and take, but please believe we do everything we can to keep our users' interests as our highest goal. We're on your side, and we can often make a difference for it.

2 little 2 late. They should have released it officially to the public prior to itunes release(and we know that this is the only reason that they released the beta). Winamp 5 is definitely the best winamp version ever(I've been using the leaked alpha for a bit), but I'll no longer need it now that itunes has been released.

Phew! thought my skinning days where done! Yet, i guess there'll always be the hardcore 2x group. I think this seems pretty neat, i mean, there's really no reason not too, especially if the classic mode will be as stable as 2x was...

diggin it already! najs!

sounds like a quick, slapass attempt to counter itunes. everything since winamp 2 has sucked, stability goes to shit, playlists suck ass, interface only got worse, the ram, omg...ridiculous. im running on a dual 1ghz pentium3 with 1gb of ram and the fucker can take like 10-14mb. not cool. unfortunately, winblows doesnt seem to want to let me use itunes. soooo im stuck with a POS winamp. blah. what an ugly piece of software. im amazed anyone uses it...a seperate playlist/main window is filthy. i hate the skins; theyre just that: skins. nothing new and exciting, just bad versions of the original...none of them help the functionality. at least itunes is nice to look at, a bit more of a timeless design (wtf is with winamps constant use of the green txt on black background? its ugly and hard as shti to read sometimes).

fixed win98 crash with desktop alpha? not sure what that means but ummm, should windows98 problems be fixed with...windows 98?

the rest of the new features jsut seem like stuff that shouldve been included a long time ago...i donno. mb once they come up with some sort of good looking, stable, flexible app, ill use it.
