The authors of the Nullsoft Scriptable Installation System (NSIS) have released a new beta.

Those who follow the NSIS development know that beta 4 must be considered as a milestone. The open-source software has gone a long way, since it was started for the one purpose to give Winamp an installer.

Beta version 4 of NSIS 2, the popular win32 installer system, is finished. NSIS 2 includes a new Modern User Interface, supports multiple languages and features an easy plugin system. NSIS is still the smallest win32 installer available, with an overhead of only 34 KB.

The most noticeable new features in this release are CHM documentation (searchable and has an index), the ability to use any page anywhere and any number of times, real user variables, complete default strings in the langauge files, improved large files handling mechanism, full RTL support, per-file extraction progress and commands to add version resource.

I posted this article in the knowledge, that NSIS is not only valuable for the visualization artists here on DeviantArt, but also for software developers and other deviants.

This is excellent. But, I prefer to use the Windows Installer Service in my applications. It's easy to setup from right within the Visual Studio IDE.

I used to use NSIS back when before the Windows Installer was available. It's very nice and easy to use and is an excellent tool that is a perfect alternative to InstallShield, MindVision, WISE and many other expensive deployment environments that the individual application developer can use.
