Alright, so here we are in late 2013. About ten years ago visbot was founded, and if my memory serves me well, the first release came out in February or March 2003. We had a bunch of shabby websites from early on, some revisions can still be viewed on Wayback Machine. Throughout the years, the layout changed a couple of times and so did the backend. But for a group of people busy in the visual field, our website had all been remarkably text-based. Sure, we had screenshots here on DevianArt, or on Customize, Winamp and some other sites that are long gone. It was possibly difficult for outsiders to get an idea of our craft, but that is about to change!

As of today, a first public beta of the new is online. Not only do we feature video previews for most of the bigger packs (more to come!), it's also easier to find the content your looking for. We currently serve way over 300 releases and therefor introduce an intuitive filter system (hat-tip to nemoorange for amazing JQuery plug-ins). You can also choose between bundled downloads and browsing for individual presets for most of our releases. There's still some work ahead of us (search, more filters!), but we think the new site offers a much greater experience than that old text-list of ours. We hope you like it as much as we do and are looking forward to hear your feedback!

As a follow-up to the provocatively titled End of AVS, here are some good news. Thanks to Moonbeam13 and the deviantart developers, it is now possible to upload .pimp files to the visualization galleries. This is probably the best results for both sides: AVS artists can still distribute an installable format while DeviantArt does not have to worry about corrupted executables.

Now, what does this mean for AVS artists? You might not have known, but for several years, PimpBot has produced two files:

1. an installer for distribution (.exe)
2. a project file (.pimp)

These project files contain all the data for the installer and can be loaded to (re)build an executable file. However, you can also install directly from a project file using PimpBot Runtime. That runtime has been part of the PimpBot distribution for years and it's also available as a single download. By default, these files are stored in a folder called "My PimpBot Files" (inside My Documents or maybe your DropBox folder.)

In future, you can upload these files to DeviantArt without running into problems. This also comes with two advantages:

1. acts like a standard installer through PimpBot RunTime
2. suspicious natures can simply use their unpacker to get to the content without having to install extra software

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here!

End of AVS by yathosho

as if the state of avs wasn't bad enough, deviantart stabs the scene in its back with a new policy that no longer allows users to upload installers - the standard way to distribute avs (and milkdrop) files for over ten years. read on...

Quite some substantial changes lead to this new major version of PimpBot 4. The updater can now choose between two download mirrors, creation of .pimp files has been overhauled, and some of the secret features can now be recreated from their .pimp files. PimpBot portability improved and the new /portable switch will configure everything automatically. As a side-effect, this new version is the first to support old Windows 9x/ME, though there are some limitations. Also fixed a bug in the new UI, as of now the statusbar should work correctly.

All in all, here's a good reason to update. Of course this is old news if you have recently used the inbuilt updater.

To make things short, download the new version of PimpBot already. It's awesome in so many ways (really!)

I strongly suggest upgrading all your old installers, especially if you ever had a complaint that your pack was a virus, trojan or any other kind of malware.

edit: I'm aware of this update bug when trying to install 4.2.1! It's been fixed for the upcoming release, but the workaround is a simple manual upgrade - which I recommend doing!

You might have noticed that a lot of packs by visbot, avsociety, Winamp-Forums and myself were updated in the last couple of days. The reason for that is the release of PimpBot 4 and it's a good reason. If you've been wise enough to keep your .pimp files, you are advised to recompile your previous installers.

Why bother? Going through some of the old installers, I have noticed many use a faulty install routine, ultimately forcing the user to move the files to the proper location. PimpBot 4 has the yet best install routines for AVS, MilkDrop or SPS presets. It handles alternate visualization directories, supports a handful of AVS modifications by default and has the yet best APE handling.

If you want your presets to be seen and not cause any trouble to the user, you should upgrade PimpBot and rebuild your installers. In case you lost your precious .pimp files, there are several ways to help you out: use DropFolder (or FuzzyDrop) or some of the useful tools in your PimpBot folder. Got a zillion .pimp files and you're afraid of the work? Don't be!

i was just talking to Grandchild about the purple heart you can see on my profile page in the upper right corner.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. military. -Wikipedia
