End of AVS by yathosho End of AVS by yathosho
as if the avs situation in general, and especially on deviantart, wasn't bad enough - it is now longer allowed to upload installers as it's been a standard for over 10 years.

i do understand the general security concerns over hosting executable files, but at the same time deviantart staff showed little interest to support available alternatives. for avs and milkdrop, the alternative are .pimp files, basically 7-zip files that can be interpreted as installers. unfortunately, deviantart's backend automatically renames those files to .7z and thus all the functionality from those files is being removed (unless you're aware you can simply rename the file back to .pimp)

unfortunately, the is little we can do. since the scene has been shrinking over the years, i don't see how we could find enough backers in a petition (or anything like that.) still, you could try and spread the word about this by sharing the thumbnail in a journal entry. simply copy the thumbnail code on the left, and if you like add this text to it. there's also a forum discussion that you can take part in!

Long time user, first time AVS poster here...if you want to revive the scene, start making clips from the better AVS presets over the years into music video backgrounds for new artists ...they look AMAZING as bluescreen backgrounds. I'm still working on presets of my own but the real heroes of the scene, people like Zamus, Tuggumi, Duo, Nixa, Skupers, Frames of Reality, yourself...your work should be seen by millions. Imagine if clips and captures could be offered to networks like VH1 or MTV...?

Hope the scene doesn't die forever!

i've seen my work projected live a few times which makes me really proud to be honest, but the core members pretty much moved on by now. also, they were seen by a large amount of people already, i've looked at the downloads of my fourth pack and it is pretty frightening.
i think the first time i've seen some presets on the big screen was the 2006 tool tour during rosetta stoned, where something that was almost identical with one of my presets flashed in for a few seconds followed by roughly 15 seconds of something that was based on a shock-value preset. my jaw dropped to the ground. and that's enough recognition for me in terms of AVS. i wore a tool shirt in seventh grade and to think someone of that calibre seen my shit is beyond words.
see my recent journal for a take on this whole scene.

From the recent Site Update: "Submissions to the Visualizations Gallery misidentified the .pimp filetype as .7z. Fixed by $ZombieCoder"

That's good news, right?
